After the Bob Dylan song of the same name, this is a Desolation Row to walk in, populated with my own characters. In the song, dark and dystopian scenes have fictional, historic, and biblical characters commit all sorts of absurd, malevolent, or senseless acts. Passports are painted brown, postcards of lynchings are sold, and the Titanic starts its star-crossed voyage, all the while Cinderella is sweeping the floor. “Everybody is making love or else expecting rain.” Despite its bleak setting and desolate characters, the song is also full of humor and inclined to lift a listener’s mood. Just the thing we need in our own dark times.
